A Journal From The Owners – After Gems142
From 1st to 7th April, our company’s owners and dedicated founders – Nadia and Tom Macer-Wright – took to the South West Coast Path and walked 142 miles, to raise money for Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust.
We caught up with Nadia, as she reflected on their journey…
What motivated you to participate in Gems142?
“It was a chance to discover parts of Cornwall we haven’t visited before and spend some quality time together – we were up for a different kind of challenge!”
What challenges did you face during Gems142 and how did you overcome them?
“We hadn’t banked on storm Kathleen trying to blow us off the cliff at every turn! I overcame my vertigo in parts by hugging the hedges and sometimes crawling along. Tom shielded me from some if the worst of it by being a buffer between me and the cliff edge, especially at Chipman Point and Beeny Cliffs heading into Boscastle”
Why did you choose an EchoPoint bench for Treliske?
“We’d seen the benefits of what this bench has brought to members of the fire brigade, local schools and visitors at the Eden Project and we understand how important stress relief is to people who work in highly stressful environments like the NHS.”
In what ways do you think Gems142 has impacted your personal growth?
“We overcame a very challenging experience by digging deep and not giving up, which has certainly helped with our resilience.”
Can you share a memorable moment from your Gems142 experience?
“On Day 4, after a particularly tough morning slipping and sliding in constant driving rain and gale force winds, the sun came out and we saw Anna and Amy from The RCHT waving to us from across Treyarnon Bay! They bought us a coffee, gave us hand cream and lip balm and walked with us for a couple of miles. A big shout out to the lady who runs Melt – she donated to this wonderful cause – and also to the other cafe owners who gave us free drinks and encouragement!”
What was your favourite part of the Gems142 journey?
“The hike has finished but the journey has just begun and we’re excited to see how this benefits the people who work for the NHS and beyond”
