The owners of this wonderful Gem shared their stories and gave us an insight into how they’ve made North Quay Beach House into the inspiring home that it is today.

Tell us about you and what connects you to the St Ives Bay Area?

We had a wonderful surprise 40th birthday in this area, to enjoy a long weekend, and when we saw the three-mile beach and dunes, we were smitten. In the pandemic – some 20 years later and after many great holidays with Cornish Gems in this area – we watched a lovely film about the North Quay Development and then decided to purchase North Quay Beach House to enjoy with our family. We love Cornwall – my partner and I married here in 1992 and just adore the people, the coastline, the food and the quirky villages that house such vibrant communities. We are also excited to see how the development will allow Hayle to be recognised fully alongside the busier spots of St Ives and Carbis Bay.

What do you recommend to guests in the St Ives Bay Area to experience?

The main attraction to North Quay Beach House is the unbelievably short walk to one of the most spectacular beaches in Cornwall. Even in the peak months, it is rarely crowded and you have the opportunity to walk along the beach – one way to Godrevy Lighthouse and then back through the dunes. The Cove Cafe and The Rockpool are healthy eating spots enroute, as is the brilliant surfers breakfasts at the National Trust and Sunset Cafe.

We love walking from St Ives to the Tinners Inn and having a Moomaid Ice Cream after a fairly demanding hike. We also regularly have a coffee in Carbis Bay and then enjoy a lovely walk into St Ives – enjoy a few hours of hustle and bustle then walk back to Carbis bay – occasionally treating ourselves to Afternoon Tea at The Ugly Butterfly. We love arriving at the restaurant early enough to see the sunset, so we ask for a table at the front, to enjoy the most spectacular food and view.

What makes North Quay Beach House special to you?

It’s an oasis of calm, decorated during the pandemic, when there was the opportunity to carefully consider the experience we wanted to create for our guests. We shopped locally and are delighted to showcase local artisans talents. The main bedroom opens onto the estuary and is such a relaxing spot to see the fishing boats and paddle boarders come and go. The home is special to us, because we feel we have created a space for families and friends to really relax and enjoy a true hidden gem.

Tell to us about the inspiration behind the interiors.

My inspiration for the interiors came from the exteriors – the incredible wildlife, the beaches and the dunes that make up this three-mile beach and St Ives Bay. I also visited the Tate in St Ives and lots of art galleries for colour inspiration and ideas. Lydia Allen, who was in her first year of starting out on her own, as an interior designer, was a wonderful thinking partner. North Quay Beach House was lovely project to shape and guide in its early stages. We worked together and Lydia had the most incredible guidance to give around the dimensions of the furniture, the art work and more.

How would you spend your perfect stay at North Quay Beach House?

My perfect stay would definitely involve several big hikes around West Cornwall’s coastal path, stopping in beautiful villages like Porthleven, exploring beaches such as Mullion Cove, Kynance Cove or Godrevy, and experience freshwater swimming in Penzance. I also love enjoying beautiful fresh produce for lunch in places like Gurnards Head, Amelies or Birdies, which is closer to home. We recommend booking a trip to the Minnack Theatre, where you can take an evening picnic, after a days walk to Lands End and return home via the open topped bus. In the evening, we love to cook a lovely meal with our family, after the kids have come back from a day of surfing or paddleboarding. To finish the day, I love reading and relaxing in North Quay Beach House, then waking early to enjoy the sunrise on the beach.
