Reviving Farrar Cottage: A Tale of Restoration and Local Legacy

One of their recent endeavours involved the restoration of Farrar Cottage, nestled in the secluded beauty of Pendeen. Stella and Steve, the current owners, embarked on a labor of love to transform this historic dwelling into a place filled with cherished memories and the tales of its past. The previous occupants of this charming countryside cottage had embraced its cosy embrace for many years before their passing.

During their stay in the cottage, Stella and Steve not only provided care for the elderly owners but also diligently maintained the property. Following the previous owners’ passing, the cottage remained abandoned for nearly a quarter of a century. However, it found new guardianship when Stella and Steve successfully acquired it through an auction, ensuring that this cherished abode would remain within the embrace of a local family.

In stark contrast to the common scenario of secondary residences lying dormant for a substantial portion of the year, Farrar Cottage is under the ownership of local individuals who harbour a profound sentimental attachment to this residence. Moreover, this cherished abode is made available for rental throughout the year, offering numerous individuals the opportunity to relish a delightful holiday experience away from the bustling and overcrowded destinations typical of Cornwall.

In honour of the genuine friendship shared with the former owners, Mr. and Mrs. Farrar, the couple aptly christened the house as “Farrar Cottage.” They undertook a comprehensive interior renovation, relocating the staircase and opening up the ground floor, instantly bestowing a greater sense of spaciousness to the home.

From the very first on-site meeting, it became evident just how deeply committed the property owners were to their project. It was crucial to ensure that the interior design truly mirrored their determination and relentless efforts to rejuvenate this long-neglected building. When they acquired the property, it was devoid of a bathroom, the roof had caved in, and there was scarcely a semblance of a functional kitchen.

Tailoring Interiors: A Personalised Approach

Tara, the leader of the interiors department, prioritises comprehensive consultations with homeowners to fully grasp their desired style and vision. The team seeks to understand the owner’s personality, and this insight informs the creation of concept boards. This ensures that the decor and design are tailored to match the owner’s preferences. At Gems Interiors, there’s no rigid style or aesthetic; instead, the approach is flexible and adapts to the unique taste of each owner.

The interior and surrounding grounds were designed to maximise the available space, drawing inspiration from the architect’s blueprints, particularly the graceful curved wall on the upper floor. This stunning vaulted ceiling and the curved wall serve as a striking feature, elegantly dividing the two bedrooms.

Within the concept boards for Farrar Cottage, an array of colours spanned from soothing coastal tones to vibrant jungle-inspired patterns, meticulously curated for every room. With its two contemporary bedrooms, Gems Interiors dedicated extensive effort to flawlessly design each space while upholding comfort and a sense of home.

From the selection of tiles to the placement of light switches, every detail was carefully considered and thoughtfully styled to create Farrar Cottage’s unique identity. As the installation process commenced, the entire team convened at the property, working diligently to bring the envisioned designs from paper to reality. Each table leg was securely fastened, and all fixtures were meticulously placed to unify the home, piece by piece.

To complete the masterpiece crafted by Gems Interiors, Farrar Cottage was adorned with vibrant cushions and an abundance of lush greenery, infusing the final touches of refinement and natural beauty.

Crafting an exceptional kitchen that seamlessly fits into the limited space while also establishing a warm and inviting living area was a priority. The integration of barstools and a breakfast bar enhances the functionality and appeal of the space. Furthermore, the design successfully marries traditional elements with a modern, design-focused flair.

The sunset room, nestled within one of the original outhouses, creates a magical indoor/outdoor space for relaxation, whether you’re looking to cosy up during stormy weather or savour a drink while watching the sun set over the coast.
