Romantic Escapades: Unveiling The Charms Of Cornwall
Cornwall is flooded with intimate days out, for all types of couples, whether you’re adventure-seekers or prefer a laid-back approach to romance. In Cornwall, we don’t choose the ordinary path of activities, as we’ve got heaps of unique and exciting days out, that compare to the generic ‘picnic in the park’ or ‘pottery painting’ excursion.
If you’re looking for ideas on what to buy your partner, why not purchase a Cornish Gems voucher? Add anything from £25-£1000, to put towards your next romantic retreat in Cornwall. Check out our list of activities for couples and get ready to tick them off during your stay.
Dining Experience
There’s hundreds of outstanding eateries, spread across the county, with options for all appetites. Whatever your taste buds are calling for, Cornwall is proud to create bold flavours, out of a variety of local produce, including fish bought directly from sea to plate and hand picked vegetables, grown from scratch across a number of farms. Many of these fabulous restaurants pride themselves in the atmosphere set for their guests, so we’ve picked out our favourite spots, where there’s romance in the air.
Based in Wadebridge, ONDA is an Italian-inspired restaurant, crafted by Ben Ambridge. Specialising in gorgeous flavours and beautifully-paired wine, prepare to enhance your holiday experience with this extraordinary find, tucked away amongst other food hotspots in the north of Cornwall.
Hidden away on the south coast, in Flushing, Harbour House has become a hit with locals. Despite only opening in the recent months, this extraordinary public house offers a romantic ambiance, served alongside delicious meals. With a passion for creating great food, alongside the support of excellent suppliers, Harbour Heights is a must visit destination for your next romantic getaway.
Lastly, we head further west, to Carbis Bay, for a bite to eat at the Ugly Butterfly. Imagine enjoying a mouth-watering dish, alongside a tempting glass of wine, with undisturbed views across the Atlantic. Allow the chef, Adam Handling, serve flavourful menus, whilst you listen to the waves ebb and flow in the distance.
Vineyard and Orchard Tour
Cornwall may not be as well-known for its wine as France or Italy, but don’t underestimate our little county! Cornish suppliers of wine create valuable produce that are offered to many renowned restaurants, as well as available in local stores or supermarkets.
Just outside of Padstow, in the heart of the glorious Cornish countryside, Trevibban Mill is known for its award-winning production of wines and ciders. If you’re looking to improve your wine knowledge, attend one of their guided tours, led by one of the owners. Throughout this experience, you’ll receive hands-on information about how the wine is produced, as well as some behind-the-scenes insights. Following the factual stroll around the vineyard, huddle into the tasting room, where you and your partner can try five selected wines, all created within the orchard.
If you’re not a wine lover, fear not! Trevibban Mill is also known to craft gorgeous south-west cider. Join a tutored walk around the apple orchard, where you’ll learn all about harvest, as well as the ins and outs of how to make an excellent cider. Like the wine tour, complete the journey with a well-deserved selection of cider, before buying some to bring home with you!
Bike Trails
If you and your partner prefer an action-packed trip, grab your holiday by the handlebars and pedal across Cornwall’s majestic landscapes. Everyone is familiar with the renowned Camel Trail, running across the beautiful sights of north Cornwall, but for a romantic cycle, we’d suggest finding somewhere a little more secluded.
Many of Cornwall’s blossoming woodlands have bike paths, where you can race through the trees or dawdle around the bends. Just outside of Falmouth, Ponsanooth is home to Kennall Vale, a magical woodland with a winding stream. Although not huge, this gorgeous forest is worth visiting, as it’s flooded in spots for a couples’ photograph amongst the greenery or a romantic stroll, after dismounting your bike.
As well as tempting woodland trails, Cornwall has dozens of beautiful moors, awaiting your touch. In St Columb, beside Newquay, Goss Moor hosts a 7.5 mile cycling trail, across the stunning nature reserve. Whilst you pedal, keep an eye out for the rare flora and fauna that hide amongst the moor.
For those that are interested in the array of National Trust properties around Cornwall, Lanhydrock Estate is the perfect destination for those that prefer wheels to walking. Tucked just outside of Bodmin, the estate is carved with a variety of routes, for all abilities of cyclists.
Spa Experience
It’s been a long year and you deserve some TLC. Why not invite your partner for a pamper session in one of Cornwall’s luxurious spas? Imagine soaking away the stress in a tub, or finding your zen, whilst the knots are massaged out of your shoulders. There’s nothing more relaxing than an intimate spa date with your other half.
For an experience like no other, The Scarlet, in Mawgan Porth, is known to be a peaceful eco-spa, tucked into the rugged clifftops. This stunning find is complete with an indoor pool, a cedar wood sauna, a rejuvenating steam room and views of the azure sea – what more could you ask for? Achieve ultimate relaxation, with a treatment of your choice, in the lantern-lit rooms, whilst side by side with your loved one.
A little further south, by the Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth, St Michael’s Resort offers restorative treatments, so you can experience true bliss. Within this calming sanctuary, the largest hydrothermal pool in the South West takes residence, along with tropical spa gardens and reviving relaxation rooms.
If you’d prefer a pamper day at home, Cornish Gems have teamed up with the wonderful spa therapists at Wise Sage. This fabulous group of specialists offer extraordinary treatments, which you can enjoy from the comfort of your home. With everything from massages, yoga experiences and even soap making classes, you’re certain to feel revitalised.
Gin Distillery
We’ve covered all bases for wine and cider lovers, but what about those who can’t wait for a G&T on a Friday night? Cornwall is also a large distributor in quality gin, that is stocked across many local stores and bars.
For a true taste of Cornish gin, there’s nowhere better than Tarquins Distillery. This renowned company is based by the rolling hilltops of the north coast, nestled between Mawgan Porth and Padstow, for phenomenal views to enjoy whilst you drink. The distillery is now offering tours around their facilities, for the perfect present for your gin-loving partner. Throughout the tour, you’ll be given the backstory of Tarquins and discuss how it has created such a name for itself. Following the history lesson, the tour leaders will give you a botanical masterclass, alongside a tasting session, of their recommended gins.
If you’re wanting an extra special treat, Tarquins offers exclusive experiences, such as waxing your own bottle. For those who are familiar with Tarquins, you’ll know that each bottle is hand-dipped into wax, to finish off the luxury-looking exterior. With this wonderful gift, your partner will get to take home their very own one-of-a-kind gin bottle, which has been sealed and set with their own hands!
Coastal Adventures
Whether you’re a city-dweller or a seasoned seaside explorer, everyone loves beaches, and there’s no doubting that Cornwall has an abundance of them. No matter the season, a blend of locals and tourists hit the beaches for a dip in the tempting waters, or even brave the waves. As a couple, it’s a delight to enjoy some 1:1 time, without the fuss of large crowds or the struggle of finding a space to put your towel.
We’re letting you in on our secrets, and showing you our favourite hidden spots, unknown to many. Buried amongst the west coast, just across from Porthcurno, our Online Retail Executive, Eira, suggests taking a wander around Penberth Cove. During low tide, a pebbled beach is exposed, alongside boulders and a slipway. Penberth is also an ideal place for a secluded paddle or snorkel with your partner, amongst its sheltered and quiet surroundings.
Practically at the bottom of the county, another quiet beach sits amongst the cliffs, in Porthgwarra. A particular favourite of Cornish Gems owners, Nadia and Tom, this quiet part of Cornwall boasts beautifully blue views and rocky paths, making it truly part of the wild west. Steeped in history and elegance, Porthgwarra is especially important to Nadia and Tom, as they brought their daughters to this hidden spot, whilst they were growing up.
