Stargazey: A Place of History, Healing and ‘Cornish Hygee’

Hidden away within the natural beauty of North Cornwall, sits Stargazey, an idyllic home redesigned with passion by the owner, Joe. Blending the charm of original character with modern comforts, Joe has achieved a rustic countryside retreat that doesn’t compromise on quality and indulgence.

With a passion for wellbeing and nature, Joe tells us of his love for North Cornwall, his thoughtful design choices, and the kind of stay guests can experience at this home rooted in Cornish agricultural history.

1. Tell us more about you and your connection to Cornwall.

Cornwall has always been a special place for me. Growing up in rural Shropshire, some of my fondest childhood memories are rooted in family holidays, discovering the beauty of the Cornish coast. Fast forward 20 years, and work brought me back to the Southwest, providing an opportunity to rekindle that deep connection, spending weekends with friends, rediscovering the stunning landscape, surfing and exploring. So, when the opportunity arose, I took the chance to drop anchor in Cornwall, eager to share my love for this incredible place with friends, family, and future guests.

2. What experience did you envision for guests of Stargazey when you bought it?

From the outset, my vision for Stargazey was simple: to create a retreat to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with what matters most – nature, wellbeing, and the people we hold dear. A kind of Cornish Hygge, if you will. Furnishing the barn, I was drawn to natural, organic textures and materials, from brands like Nkuku and Tikamoon, with a focus on ethical sustainability and uncompromising quality. The artwork pays homage to Cornwall, featuring a range of seascapes by Gee by the Sea – a talented friend from Shropshire who now works from her studio in Falmouth. The garden mirrors this vision, with a rustic, Mediterranean-inspired design at the front to highlight the barn’s rugged beauty, while the back is transformed into a miniature jungle – a nod to The Eden Project – bringing lush greenery and a sense of adventure right to your doorstep. My hope is that Stargazey offers more than just a place to stay. I want guests to experience Cornish Hygge: the calm, comfort, and connection that comes from being surrounded by thoughtful design, and the natural beauty of Cornwall.

3. Do you know the history behind the property?

Yes, Stargazey is part of a collection of barns that once made up Rosewastis Farm, where cattle were reared for over a century. Today, it retains much of its original Cornish charm with thick stone walls, exposed beams, and that unmistakable slate roof. If you look closely, the barn quietly tells its own story: stone floor drains by the rear door, the small holes along the windows where wooden bars once served as makeshift shutters, and rusted metal fixtures in the beams that once stored hay. These subtle details offer more than just character; they create a living connection to Cornwall’s history.

4. Stargazey is in a unique part of Cornwall, what draws you there the most and what do you love to do in the area?

Stargazey provides the perfect balance – nestled within the Cornish countryside, surrounded by meadows and trees, but within a stone’s throw of some of the UK’s most breathtaking coastlines. For a weekend escape, I might check out the stunning coastal paths around Bedruthan Steps, head for a surf at Watergate Bay, and go for dinner at The Merrymoor Inn. With a little more time, I love exploring further along the North Coast or even down to the South. The rugged coastal path from St Agnes to Porthtowan, with the iconic Wheal Coates, is a beauty. For an alternative on the South, there is a lush, verdant walk from Fowey to Polkerris – I highly recommend a sea swim followed by lunch at Sam’s on the beach. When it’s time to unwind, there’s no better place than back at the barn, settling into a good film or book on the sofa and soaking in the tranquillity that makes Stargazey feel like home.

5. Well-being is important to you when it comes to the experience of Stargazey, how do you think staying here can help with healing and destressing?

Well-being is at the heart of Stargazey. The calming atmosphere, the surrounding nature and the sense of escape create the perfect environment for relaxation and healing. For some, this might mean a slow morning at the barn after a deep, restorative sleep, sipping coffee on the balcony, listening to birdsong. For others, it could be diving into the elements, with a cold-water swim filling you with adrenaline and endorphins. Whatever your preference, I believe that Stargazey provides a kind of holistic healing – one that nourishes mind, body and soul.

6. Is there anything else you’d like guests to know about the experience at Stargazey?

What I want guests to know is that Stargazey is more than just a place to stay – it’s truly a home. Every detail reflects my deep connection to Cornwall and my desire to share that love with others. From the carefully chosen artwork to the considered touches like dog treats for your furry companions, I’ve designed the space to feel warm, inviting, and personal. My hope is that each guest finds a sense of comfort and belonging here, whether they’re seeking a peaceful retreat or an adventurous escape. Stargazey is a space for building memories that remain long after your stay, and I hope each visit becomes a cherished tradition – returning year after year to relax, reconnect, and create your own special moments in this magical corner of Cornwall.

I would love to hear about your experiences, whether that’s online, in our guestbook, or even through sharing your stories with loved ones using our collection of postcards. It’s all part of the journey, and I’m thrilled to be a small part of the memories you’ll make here.
