Through the Eyes of the Owner: Long Commons, St Mawes
Located in an elevated position above St Mawes and the Carrick Roads waterway, Long Commons is an outstanding family home, making the most of the beautiful sea views with reverse-level living. Guests have described Long Commons as “a luxurious experience in a stylish and comfortable property in the most lovely location. The views are outstanding.” But we’d love to show you around through the eyes of Long Commons’ owners, Guy and Sophie.
Tell us about what the property was like when you bought it and the story behind the renovation.
“We felt blessed to find such a spacious property, both inside and outside, within our budget. We have always loved St Mawes, and we have links with the village from our childhood. We have enjoyed a journey of putting our own stamp on the property to suit our family needs; boating, sailing, swimming, fishing, walking, our first grandchild, gardening, entertaining, spending time with the family and relaxing.”
Long Commons is perfect for both indoor and outdoor living, connecting the two through terrace and balcony spaces, was this important to you during the renovation?
“This is exactly what we wanted to achieve. With warm summers in Cornwall, we wanted to be able to escape without flying or travelling a long distance. Our family home has leaded windows and with our busy livelihood we felt we did not have the time and space to appreciate the outside to its full advantage, although it is also in a beautiful situation.”
We see Long Commons as one of our more peaceful, secluded, quiet Gems – is this the experience you want guests to have at the property?
“We are always surprised how very quiet the property is, even in high season. The tranquility bring us close to nature and we never tire of the ever chaning view over The Roseland Peninsula and harbour. We love it that there are two dips on the land horizon that allow us to get a glimpse of the big sea beyond! It gives us huge pleasure to be able to share our home with guests from Cornish Gems.”
What inspired the interior design choices – did you hire professionals to support this or did you put your own personality in the property?
“We very much enjoyed using our own inspiration to create our new home, but we did need a bit of advice to achieve this. We tried to source both business help and furniture items locally to support the community, as this is important to us. We understand the community concerns with holiday homeowners and we felt it important to try to show our depth of love and respect of the locality.”
Tell us more about you and your connection to Cornwall
“As a family, we embrace the outdoor life and fresh air. It is wonderful to be able to spend time together or separately away from the daily chores of life. That is a privilege we have often dreamt of and are lucky enough to now achieve that at our mid-age. Entertaining our friends and family and allowing our children in their late twenties and thirties to do the same.”
What do you love about St Mawes and The Roseland, what draws you to this part of Cornwall?
“We love the coastline in the immediate area of St Mawes and Roseland Peninsula. The many walks immersed in proper historic nature, the beautiful gardens and endless views are tireless. The memories have remained instilled in us from happy childhood days spent sailing and staying nearby with our independent families. It is the space for walking sailing and relaxing in that is blissful.”
